The Louisiana Education Loan Authority (Lela) Parents In Action Leadership Initiative recruits and trains 2-3 parent leaders from ten schools in leadership and communication. ADF educates parents in the governance structures of the school system, trains them in grassroots organizing, and provides them with constructive strategies that they can use to hold the system accountable and create an effective partnership with their child's school that strengthens both teaching and learning. After being trained, parents will design a school project that improves student achievement and involves more parents at their school.
In the 2005-2006 school year, Lela Parents in Action parents positively impacted student achievement at their schools. Schools that participated developed a summer reading program that encouraged parent and child discussions. Schools strengthened parent and child relationships through newsletters, workshops, and sessions that focused on reading, writing, math, and science skills. One participating school built an outdoor classroom to encourage learning in a whole new way!
Parents and schools interested in participating in the 2006-2007 Parents in Action Program should call ADF at 922-4560 or write to info@adfbr.org.
